Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves.

To eat the flesh and drink the blood is to take a truth so completely into yourself that it becomes your own substance. The Son of man is the fulfilled self you long to be, the man already in possession of the wish. You do not admire that man from a distance. You feed on him, absorbing his state until his conviction runs in you like blood.
Without this there is no life, because a desire held at arm's length stays a wish and never quickens. The one who merely believes in a better self, yet keeps eating and drinking his old defeated state, has no life in the thing he wants. Life begins when you consume the assumption whole, when the feeling of the answered prayer becomes what you are made of rather than something you hope to receive. What you take in and make flesh is what you become.

To eat the flesh and drink the blood is to take the awakened consciousness fully into oneself and make it one's own substance, not to consume any outer body. The Son of man is the higher self born within a person, and its flesh and blood are the very being and living energy of that inner Christ. Merely believing about it from a distance leaves the self hollow; the life is only real when this awareness is absorbed until it becomes the flesh and blood of the one who lives.
Without that inward taking-in, a person is animated but not truly alive, moving through days without the deeper life awake in them. The life spoken of enters only when the higher self is made into one's own inner flesh.
