John 8:34 Meaning Jesus Answered Them

Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.

What does John 8:34 mean?

To sin is simply to believe in separation, and the mind that holds this belief has made itself the property of it. It does not commit an error and then walk free; it becomes bound to the very thought it entertains, obeying guilt as though guilt were its master.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To sin is simply to believe in separation, and the mind that holds this belief has made itself the property of it. It does not commit an error and then walk free; it becomes bound to the very thought it entertains, obeying guilt as though guilt were its master. This is not a punishment set upon it from outside. A mind that chooses fear will serve fear, because whatever it accepts as true becomes the ruler of all it does.

So the bondage is nothing more than a decision held in place. What enslaves is not an act but the belief that gives the act reality, and a belief can be laid down as easily as it was taken up.

Servant: the mind that has handed its will to what it believes in, obeying the thought it has made its master.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The old meaning of sin is to miss the mark, to fall short of the awareness that is your true nature. Whoever lives in that unconsciousness becomes its servant, driven by compulsions he never chose and cannot even see: the reactive habits, the endless wanting, the old pain that acts through him.

This is what such slavery means. As long as you are identified with the conditioned mind, you are not the one acting. The pattern is acting and calling itself 'me.' Freedom is not being able to do whatever the impulse demands. It begins the moment you become aware of the impulse instead of blindly obeying it.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Sin is missing the mark, which means failing to embody the desired state of consciousness. Entertaining thoughts of lack, weakness, or resentment binds an individual to those exact conditions.

A person becomes the prisoner of whatever state they consent to dwell within. Yielding repeatedly to sensory evidence enslaves awareness to outer limitation.

Live John 8:34 today

  1. Watch what you reach for when you are uncomfortable today, the phone, the fridge, the same scroll. Watching it once is already loosening the grip.
  2. When someone annoys you and you start building the case against them in your head, stop mid sentence. Keep going and you will spend the whole evening working for that thought.
  3. Under pressure, when you feel like you have no choice, say plainly to yourself that you do, even if every option is hard. The feeling of having no choice is the actual chain.

What thought have you been obeying today as though it gave the orders?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The mind takes the shape of what it dwells on, and we become the thoughts we keep returning to. Nobody is punishing us. We are being formed by what we keep choosing.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus said whoever wants something outside their control has handed their freedom to whoever holds it. The master is not a person, it is the wanting.

Tao Te Ching

The one who grips tightly loses, and the one who lets go holds everything. The grip itself is the captivity.
