John 8:35 Meaning A Bondservant Doesn’t Live in the House

A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever.

What does John 8:35 mean?

The roles you play, the identities the mind constructs, are like servants passing through a house. They come and go.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The roles you play, the identities the mind constructs, are like servants passing through a house. They come and go. The self made of thought, of achievement and memory and fear, has no permanence, because it was never your true home.

What abides is that in you which was never born and cannot die, the awareness in which every passing role appears. When you stop mistaking yourself for the temporary servant and rest as the presence beneath it, you find the one thing in you that endures: the aware Being that remains when all the roles have fallen away.

Live John 8:35 today

  1. Say your job title and your usual self description silently, then ask: who is listening to those words? Stay with whatever is still there after the labels go quiet.
  2. In your next meeting or family dinner, drop the role you normally play for one exchange, the funny one, the fixer, the quiet one, and just be present and plain. See whether anything essential is actually missing.
  3. When a message or a review threatens your sense of who you are, put the phone face down and feel your feet on the floor. What got hit was an idea about you. What is standing there is not an idea.

If every role I play were taken away this evening, what in me would still be here?
