John 8:36 Meaning If Therefore the Son Makes You Free

If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

What does John 8:36 mean?

Freedom is the power to do the good a person truly wants, and sin eats that power away. Someone caught in a habit still chooses, but the range narrows until the wanting itself bends.

CATHOLIC

Freedom is the power to do the good a person truly wants, and sin eats that power away. Someone caught in a habit still chooses, but the range narrows until the wanting itself bends.

The Son gives this freedom, doing in a person what willpower cannot and loosening a hardened will. His hearers were certain they had never been anyone's slave, and that certainty is part of the trouble, since no one asks for a rescue he believes he does not need. Confession exists for exactly this, saying the thing aloud to a priest who can speak Christ's forgiveness back.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Freedom does not come from changing the conditions of the world, for the chains were never there. It comes when the mind remembers what it is, and this remembrance is the gift of the part of itself that never forgot. The Son is that changeless truth in every mind, and when it speaks, the dream of bondage simply ends, because there was nothing real to be released from.

A mind set free this way stays free, because it has not escaped a prison but awakened from the belief that a prison was ever built. What is only imagined cannot hold, and truth needs no defense to undo it.

Son: the changeless truth in the mind, the part that never accepted separation and so can remember innocence for the whole.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Most of what a person calls freedom is only a change of prison. The mind escapes one worry and finds another, chooses this instead of that, and stays bound the whole time to the restless self doing the choosing. That is not the freedom being promised here.

The freedom the Son gives reaches the root. It goes all the way down. What wakes there lives beneath thought, a deep aliveness that no circumstance and no fear can imprison, freeing a person from the tyranny of their own mind. When that awakens in someone, their freedom no longer rises or falls with what happens around them, and so nothing outside can take it away.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The Son is not a man who lived long ago. He is your own awareness of being, the sense of I AM within you, and freedom comes from nothing outside that. Every condition you complain of is a state you have entered and confused with yourself. As long as you believe the outer world hands you your fate, you serve a master who cannot free you, because he was never there.

The Son sets you free the moment you claim to be the thing you want rather than the thing you see. You feel yourself already free, already the man you longed to be, and hold that feeling until it hardens into fact. No one and nothing can keep you in a state you have stopped occupying. The freedom is complete because the power that bound you and the power that releases you are one and the same: your own consciousness of being.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Freedom here waits on the true self to do the freeing. A person walks around bound by an old self-image, one built from failures and other people's verdicts, and every day it draws the same narrow limits. The son, the deeper self made in the likeness of its source, has power the borrowed identity never had. When that self takes the lead, the release goes all the way down.

What matters is that word "indeed." A man can talk himself calm for an afternoon and still carry the old chains underneath. When the picture of who he is changes at the root, the change holds through every room he enters. He is not managing the fear anymore. The self that was afraid is simply no longer the one running the show.

Live John 8:36 today

  1. Name, just to yourself, the thing you keep saying you could stop whenever you want. The scrolling, the drinking, the picking at a person in your head. Say the real name of it, not the soft one.
  2. Tell one person something true about where you are stuck. Not the whole story, just one honest sentence to someone who will not flinch, which is already most of the way out of hiding.
  3. When the pull hits today, in the quiet after work or in the grocery line with your phone in your hand, do not fight it with willpower alone. Say, plainly, that you cannot get out of this on your own, and ask for help.

What have I been calling a choice for so long that I stopped checking whether I could still choose otherwise?

Craving is described as a creeping vine that grows a little every time it is fed, until a person is tangled in something they planted themselves. The grip tightens so gradually that it feels like preference.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He called the man ruled by his appetites a slave, however free he looked, because he could no longer do the thing he actually wanted. Freedom is not having options, it is being able to act on what you truly judge good.
