Jonah 3:4 · World English Bible
Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”
The awakened voice within a person turns inward and begins to walk through the dense settlement of habits and repeated thoughts that have hardened into a self. Entering only a single day's journey is the first honest step of that descent, not the whole passage through.

ESOTERIC
The awakened voice within a person turns inward and begins to walk through the dense settlement of habits and repeated thoughts that have hardened into a self. Entering only a single day's journey is the first honest step of that descent, not the whole passage through. The number 40 is the measure of trial and purification, the long stretch in which the old flesh-nature is tested and worn down until it can no longer stand.
What the crying voice announces is not the ruin of a foreign place but the collapse of the accumulated inner city, so that the crowded mind may be emptied and made new. The overthrow is the falling of an old way of living so a truer one can rise in the same body.
Nineveh: the crowded inner city of thoughts, appetites, and habits a person piles up over a lifetime until they feel like home 40 days: the measured span of trial in which the flesh-nature is purified and worn down before it gives way A day's journey: the first honest step of the inward descent, one stage entered and not the whole distance crossed
Esoteric lens
What have I been living with so long that I stopped seeing it as something I could set down?
A journey of a thousand miles starts with the step you are standing on. Great things fall apart when a person tries to take the whole distance at once.
Habits are a house built one brick at a time, and they come down the same way. Patient, repeated effort wears down what looked permanent.
No one wakes up wise. The old self is worn away slowly, by a long series of ordinary days in which you do not go back to what you were.
