Joshua 1:5 · World English Bible

Joshua 1:5 Meaning No Man Will Be Able to Stand

No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you.

What does Joshua 1:5 mean?

A great task waits ahead, a river to cross and a land to enter, and with it comes the old fear that you will not be equal to it. Yet the promise given here is not that circumstances will always be easy.

Ego v. Being

A great task waits ahead, a river to cross and a land to enter, and with it comes the old fear that you will not be equal to it. Yet the promise given here is not that circumstances will always be easy. It is that something steady and present will remain with you through all of it, the same aliveness that carried those who walked before you.

What feels like an enemy standing before you is usually a thought about the future, a projection of failure that the mind mistakes for reality. That thought cannot truly stand against the awareness in you that is aware of it. Presence does not leave when things get difficult. It is the one thing that is always here, and because it is always here, you are never actually facing anything alone.

  1. Write down the thing you are dreading this week in one sentence. Read it back and ask whether it is happening now or only in your head.
  2. When someone tells you about the hard thing coming for them, do not rush in with advice. Just be there and solid, and let them feel that something steady is in the room.
  3. Before you walk into the meeting, the appointment, the hard conversation, take one slow breath in the hallway and feel yourself here. You bring that with you through the door.

What is standing in front of me right now, and what is only a picture of later?

Bhagavad Gita

Do what is yours to do without clutching at how it turns out. The one who acts from steadiness is not shaken by the result.

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. Most of what you fear is a picture you painted and then stood in front of.

Zen

The mirror is not changed by what passes across it. What is aware of your fear is not afraid.
