Joshua 6:21 · World English Bible

Joshua 6:21 Meaning They Utterly Destroyed All That Was

They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword.

What does Joshua 6:21 mean?

The city is the fortified structure of the old mind, the whole settled system of belief a person has walled up inside, and its total destruction is the complete clearing of that inner establishment. Every inhabitant falls, man and woman, young and old, because these are the paired and graded contents of the outer consciousness, the reasoning and receptive faculties, the aged convictions and the young impulses, all leveled together.

The ox, sheep, and ass are the animal energies harnessed to the old order, the powers of labor, meekness, and burden that served the fallen city.

The sword that does it is the cutting edge of discernment, the sharp spiritual word that divides and removes. When a person truly breaks with an old inner world, nothing of it is spared; the whole population of that former self, human faculties and animal drives alike, is cut away at once.

City: the walled structure of the old mind, the settled system of belief inside a person Man and woman: the paired faculties of the outer consciousness, the reasoning and receptive powers Ox: the energy of labor and strength yoked to the old inner order Sheep: the meek, following energy that belonged to the fallen city Ass: the burden-bearing energy of the lower self serving the old structure Sword: the cutting edge of discernment, the sharp word that divides and removes what is old

Live Joshua 6:21 today

  1. Pick one belief about yourself you have carried for years, that you are bad with people, always late, not creative, and stop repeating it today. Even the familiar comfortable parts of it go.
  2. Tell one person you have changed your mind about something you used to argue for. Saying it out loud to someone is what makes it real instead of private.
  3. When old reflexes come back under pressure, the sharp reply, the covering story, the drink at the end of a bad day, do not negotiate with them. You know which ones have to go whole.

What am I still keeping a little of, that I already know has to go completely?

To pour new tea the cup must first be emptied, all of it, not the top inch. A mind that keeps its old certainties has no room for what it says it wants.

What holds a person is not the world but the clinging. Cut the attachment through and the whole structure built on it comes apart with it.

True practice is subtraction, not addition. Day by day something is let go, until what is left is simple enough to move.
