Luke 11:12 Meaning Or If He Asks for an Egg
Or if he asks for an egg, he won’t give him a scorpion, will he?

Luke 11:12 · World English Bible
Or if he asks for an egg, he won’t give him a scorpion, will he?
Egg and scorpion can look alike, and that resemblance is what the question turns on. The fear answered is not that a request gets refused but that the answer might be harm wearing the shape of the thing asked for.
From the Protestant reading below.
The same verse, read by 2 traditions.

PROTESTANT
Egg and scorpion can look alike, and that resemblance is what the question turns on. The fear answered is not that a request gets refused but that the answer might be harm wearing the shape of the thing asked for.
An ordinary father, far from good, would not hand his hungry child something that stings. Suspecting God of that amounts to an accusation against His character. The child's safety rests on who the father is rather than on how well the asking was done. So what the Father hands to the one who asks can be taken and eaten.

CATHOLIC
Prayer rests on the Father's character rather than on the one praying getting the method right. A parent handing over poison exposes a fear many carry, that asking the Father might bring harm dressed as a lesson.
Sinful people still do not do this to their children, and the Father is better beyond measure. The gift he has in mind is larger than bread or eggs: the Holy Spirit, God himself given to whoever asks. So plain asking for bread and for rescue from evil stays central to the Church's prayer at Mass, her chief act of worship.
Protestant lens
What do you secretly expect to be handed instead of the thing you asked for?
The way of heaven is described as benefiting and not harming. Its nature is the reason you can rest in it.
He argued that the universe is governed well, so suspicion of it is a confusion in us, not a flaw in it. Trust follows from character, not from how cleverly you ask.
She refused to serve God out of fear of punishment, insisting love was the only honest reason. Fear of a cruel hand says more about the one afraid than the hand.
