Luke 11:34 Meaning The Lamp of the Body Is

The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body also is full of darkness.

What does Luke 11:34 mean?

Everything a mind sees is colored by the teacher it has chosen to see with. When perception is single, joined wholly to love and holding no secret grievance, the whole of experience is lit, because there is nothing in the seeing that casts a shadow.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Everything a mind sees is colored by the teacher it has chosen to see with. When perception is single, joined wholly to love and holding no secret grievance, the whole of experience is lit, because there is nothing in the seeing that casts a shadow. But when perception is divided, looking through guilt and searching for something to condemn, the same world goes dark, for the darkness was never in the world; it was in the eye that judged it.

So the light a mind lives in is never given from outside. It is the direct result of how the mind has chosen to look. Change the one who does the looking, and the darkness has nowhere left to fall.

Eye: the mind's power to perceive, the single choice of teacher through which all of experience is either lit or darkened Body: the whole field of a mind's experience, which only reflects back the light or shadow of the way it has chosen to look

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

How you see determines everything. When your seeing is single, when you meet this moment with undivided attention and no screen of thought between you and what is, awareness floods in and you are full of light.

But when your seeing is divided, split between memory and craving, you look and do not truly see. The world becomes a story the mind tells, dark with wanting and fear. So your whole experience of life follows your attention: look with the quiet, undivided awareness of presence and clarity fills you; look through the grasping mind and everything dims into confusion and fear.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

How a person looks at the world decides what world they live in. The eye is not just a window that lets light in. It also throws something out. When the inner attitude is clear, everything seems lit up. When it is troubled, the same street and the same faces all seem dark and threatening.

Much of what we think we see in others is really our own hidden condition thrown outward onto them. A bitter man meets bitterness everywhere he goes and never suspects he is carrying it with him. Clearing the eye means looking honestly at what we bring to what we see. When the inside grows clearer, the world outside stops looking so dark.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

What you aim at determines what you see. Fix your attention on one worthy thing and the whole world organizes itself around that target, lit up and legible, every detail suddenly relevant to where you are going. Divide your aim, and the same world goes dark and formless.

The eye here means more than the organ. It stands for the orientation of the soul, the object a person has chosen to pursue. A man consumed by envy walks through a lit house and calls it dark. He blames the room. Once a man knows what he values, the room around him finally comes into focus.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

The eye here is the seeing that happens inside a person, the pictures the imagination fixes on and feeds to the whole self. What the mind's eye settles on colors everything downstream. When that inner picture is single, one clear image of the person a man means to become, his whole system fills with light and moves toward it without strain. The machinery only knows how to carry out the picture it is given.

A divided eye is the trouble. When someone holds two pictures at once, the self he wants and the failure he dreads, the imagination floods with the darker one, and gloom seeps into everything he does. A clouded self-image darkens the whole man. Change what he steadily pictures, and the darkness has nothing left to feed on.

SUFISM

Sufism

The eye lets the world in, and what a person keeps looking at slowly fills the house inside. Look with greed and suspicion, and the rooms go dark; look with a clean and simple gaze, and light reaches every corner. The disease is the grasping eye that turns everything into something to want or resent. The cure is a single honest attention: one thing at a time, wished well, seen plainly.

And the eye never made the light; it only lets in what was already shining from beyond the self.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

A man never meets the world, he meets his own eyes. Filled with greed, everything becomes an opportunity; filled with fear, the same street turns into a corridor of threats. The outer scene is neutral and takes whatever colour is brought to it.

Singleness is what makes the eye clear: looking without the commentary of like and dislike, seeing a face before the mind files it as friend or stranger. In that unclouded seeing the light does not arrive from anywhere, it was always the nature of the one looking, hidden under the dust of opinion. And a man full of that light needs no rule for how to treat another, because he is no longer seeing an object.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Whatever a person keeps their attention aimed at is what fills them, and the rest may as well not exist.

Attention runs like a supply line rather than a lens. Whatever it feeds grows in size and in feeling, what grows sets the state a person meets the day in, and the state decides which actions are even available to them.

Light is not information collected about a room; it is what a body fills with once the eye has been pointed somewhere and held. So a man who audits every slight he has been handed ends up full of dark and calls it clear sight. His evidence is real; he simply gathered all of it from one direction, and everything outside that direction was deleted without a hearing. Move the aim for a month and the bitterness starves, not because the slights stopped being true but because nothing keeps arriving to feed them.

Live Luke 11:34 today

  1. Before you unlock your phone this morning, sit with it face down for ten seconds and let your mood be honest with you. You will read the same messages very differently depending on who is doing the reading.
  2. Pick one person you have quietly filed away as difficult, and spend one conversation today looking for what is good in them instead of collecting evidence. Watch how quickly they seem like a different person.
  3. When the traffic or the slow checkout line starts to feel personal, say to yourself that nothing here is against you. The irritation was in your eyes before it was in the road.

What would today look like if I stopped assuming my first impression was the truth?

Dhammapada 1

Everything follows from the mind. What you see has already been shaped by the thought you brought to the seeing.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Things do not touch the soul; the disturbance comes from your own judgment about them. Drop the judgment and the harm goes with it.

Two people look at the same moon, and one sees beauty while the other sees nothing. The difference is never in the moon.
