Therefore see whether the light that is in you isn’t darkness.

What does Luke 11:35 mean?

A person can mistake the busy glare of the mind for their own light. Thinking feels like clarity, and opinions feel like sight, yet a head full of noise can leave someone as lost as if no lamp were lit.

Ego v. Being

A person can mistake the busy glare of the mind for their own light. Thinking feels like clarity, and opinions feel like sight, yet a head full of noise can leave someone as lost as if no lamp were lit. The counterfeit convinces precisely because it never stops talking.

Beneath the mental commentary sits a quieter awareness that was never made of thought. That awareness is the light. When a person takes their thinking for the whole of who they are, the inner room dims while seeming bright. The warning is simple. What we lean on as our light had better be the awareness under the noise, and not the noise wearing its clothes.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Borrowed light is the most dangerous darkness, because a man who knows he is in the dark keeps searching, while a man carrying someone else's lamp sits down satisfied. Beliefs collected from parents, books and crowds shine exactly enough to end the search.

The test is simple, and it can only be made alone: whether anything called knowing has been lived, or only heard and repeated. What came from outside will not survive one honest look inward, and its going leaves an emptiness that feels like loss, until the seeing underneath has room to work.

Live Luke 11:35 today

  1. When you catch yourself certain about something today, your coworker's motives, how the week will go, ask quietly, do I actually know this, or am I just thinking it very loudly. Sit with not knowing for a moment before moving on.
  2. In a conversation where you disagree, try holding your opinion a little more loosely, the way you hold a cup rather than the way you hold your own name. See whether you can hear the other person while your view is still on the table.
  3. Under pressure today, in traffic or a tense call, feel your feet on the floor or your hands on the wheel for three breaths before you decide anything. The calm underneath the noise is still there, and it is the part worth listening to.

When I say I am thinking clearly, how do I tell the difference between clarity and just being loud inside?

The same truth in other traditions

Chuang Tzu

The clever mind delights in its own arguments and calls that wisdom. But a pond stirred all day reflects nothing, while a still one shows the whole sky.

Zen

Do not mistake the finger for the moon. Thoughts about the truth are useful signs, and sitting down to worship the sign leaves you exactly where you started.

Advaita Vedanta

You are not the stream of thoughts. You are what the thoughts appear in. Confuse the two and you will spend your life chasing your own weather.
