Luke 12:3 · World English Bible

Luke 12:3 Meaning Therefore Whatever You Have Said

Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light. What you have spoken in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.

What does Luke 12:3 mean?

The mind keeps no true secrets from itself. What it whispers in the dark, the quiet judgments and hidden grievances it thinks no one hears, shapes the whole of what it later meets in broad daylight, for every private condemnation returns as the world it seems to see.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind keeps no true secrets from itself. What it whispers in the dark, the quiet judgments and hidden grievances it thinks no one hears, shapes the whole of what it later meets in broad daylight, for every private condemnation returns as the world it seems to see. The inner speech becomes the outer experience.

This is cause for relief rather than dread. Since nothing stays hidden, nothing needs to be defended in the dark forever; the buried thought can be brought up, looked at with love, and undone. A mind willing to hear its own quiet accusations is a mind ready to release them, and what it no longer speaks in darkness it no longer has to live in the light.

Darkness and closets: the mind's hidden places, where it keeps the quiet judgments it believes no one hears Housetops: the open field of daily experience, where every secret grievance returns as the world a mind seems to meet

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Nothing a person hides stays hidden forever. What is whispered in the dark inner rooms of the mind, the wishes and fears we will not say aloud even to ourselves, does not stay quiet down there. It leaks upward and outward, into slips of the tongue, into moods, into the way we treat other people.

Sooner or later the secret is shouted from the rooftop of our own behavior, plain for everyone but us to read. This is why hiding a thing from ourselves never really works. What is pushed into the dark keeps its energy and finds its own way into the light, until we can no longer pretend it was never there.

Live Luke 12:3 today

  1. Catch one private comment you make about someone in your head today and let it go before it hardens. That whisper is the one shaping how the day feels to you.
  2. If you are complaining about someone to a friend, stop halfway and ask whether you would say this to their face. If not, you have found the thing worth looking at.
  3. During a tense exchange over email or text, read your draft once more for the sharpness you tucked under politeness. Take it out before you send.

What am I saying quietly to myself that I would not want to live inside all day?

What you think in private, you become. Your inner speech is already building the world you will walk around in.

Zhuangzi

Inner power cannot be kept inside. It overflows into every gesture, and others read it in you without a word being said.

Live as if you could be asked at any moment what you are thinking, and you will stop keeping thoughts you would be ashamed to say aloud.
