Luke 19:16 Meaning The First Came Before Him

The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten more minas.’

What does Luke 19:16 mean?

What a mind is given, it is meant to multiply, and here a thought returns having done exactly that. The servant does not claim the increase as his own doing; he says it is the master's pound that has gained, knowing that whatever grows in him was first placed there by love.

What a mind is given, it is meant to multiply, and here a thought returns having done exactly that. The servant does not claim the increase as his own doing; he says it is the master's pound that has gained, knowing that whatever grows in him was first placed there by love. This is how the miracle works in a willing mind: nothing is manufactured out of the self, but what love has entrusted is used and returned enlarged.

The increase belongs to the giver, and the mind that remembers this stays joined to its source. To hold what you were given and let it grow through you is to keep faith with the One who gave it, and that faithfulness is its own reward.

Servant: the part of the mind that receives from love and puts what it is given to work Pound: the spark of truth entrusted to the mind, small at first, made to increase when it is used rather than buried

  1. When something goes well today, trace it back honestly. Count the teacher, the coworker, the stranger, the plain luck. Your part is real and it is also small.
  2. Next time you get a compliment, skip the deflection and the swelling. Just say thank you, then name one person who made it possible.
  3. Under pressure, when the work is yours to deliver and you want it known that it was yours, do the thing well and let the credit land wherever it lands.
