Luke 2:52 Meaning And Jesus Increased in Wisdom and Stature

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

What does Luke 2:52 mean?

Increased translates a word for cutting a path forward. God's Son came along that road like any child: wisdom gathered slowly, a body that grew taller, a place among neighbors that widened year by year.

Increased translates a word for cutting a path forward. God's Son came along that road like any child: wisdom gathered slowly, a body that grew taller, a place among neighbors that widened year by year.

Learning meant hearing. Few households owned a scroll, so a boy took in Scripture by ear and held it by repeating. The wisdom here came that way, question by question, across years of ordinary work. Favor with God did not mean God warmed to Him slowly; a father is pleased with a five-year-old for different things than with a young man.

Live Luke 2:52 today

  1. Pick one thing you are learning and let today's part be small. Read a few lines, or practice ten minutes, and resist the voice that says it should already be further along.
  2. Ask someone a real question today and listen to the whole answer without planning your reply. Most of what you know arrived this way, through someone's voice, and it still does.
  3. When you fall short at something new, measure yourself against where you were last month instead of against the person who has done it for twenty years. You are being judged by a kinder standard than the one you are using.

What in your life are you rushing that was only ever going to come slowly?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 64

A tree that fills your arms began as a sprout, and a long road is walked one step at a time. Growth that lasts is slow and does not skip stages.

Confucius · Analects

He described his own life in decades: at fifteen set on learning, at thirty standing firm, at forty clear. Even a sage reports himself as someone who ripened over years.

Pirkei Avot 5

The rabbis mapped a whole life by age, a stage of study and strength and responsibility for each one. What a person owes at ten is not what they owe at forty.
