God moves inside history that can be dated. A moment fixed against five named officeholders could be checked by anyone who wanted to prove it false.

Tetrarch means ruler of a quarter. Herod the Great's kingdom was cut up among his sons when he died, so Herod held Galilee and Philip the rough country north and east of it. Lysanias ruled Abilene, outside that family, and a foreign governor sat over Judea because the local arrangement had collapsed. Borrowed, divided authority was the hour God picked to move, not some cleaner century He might have waited for.

Live Luke 3:1 today

  1. Write down today's date and one true thing about the mess you are in right now, the job, the money, the diagnosis, the city. This is the ground you actually get, and it is not a mistake.
  2. With one person, stop talking about the version of life you will start once things settle. Ask them what is real this week and tell them what is real for you.
  3. In the meeting or the traffic or the group chat where the arrangement is clearly broken and nobody is fully in charge, do your part well anyway. Borrowed, half-working situations are where almost everything good gets done.

What are you waiting for a better year to begin?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He wrote that we are each handed one particular slice of time and one set of circumstances, and the work is to act well inside it rather than wish for another. The hour you were given is the material.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Arjuna wants out of the messy battlefield he is standing on. He is told his duty lives in that exact place, not in some cleaner situation he might have been handed.

Zen

The teachers kept pointing students back to the ordinary dusty day in front of them, the chopping and carrying. Nothing holier is being withheld somewhere else.
