What does Luke 22:31 mean?

The sifting is the ego's testing, the pressure that tries to shake a mind loose from what it knows and scatter its certainty like chaff on the wind. What calls itself the adversary here is nothing outside; it is the belief in separation looking to reclaim a mind that had begun to remember love.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The sifting is the ego's testing, the pressure that tries to shake a mind loose from what it knows and scatter its certainty like chaff on the wind. What calls itself the adversary here is nothing outside; it is the belief in separation looking to reclaim a mind that had begun to remember love. Fear cannot create, so it can only agitate, hoping the shaking will convince the mind that it stands alone and unprotected. Yet the wheat itself is never lost in the sifting. Only the loose husk of illusion is stirred, and what is real remains.

So the reader is shown that being tested is not the same as being defeated. The trial disturbs the surface of the mind, but the truth at its center cannot be blown away, because love does not depend on the calm of the moment to be true.

Satan: the belief in separation, the voice of fear that seeks to reclaim a mind turning toward love Wheat: the reality within the mind that no testing can scatter, the truth that survives every storm the ego raises

  1. When a worry wakes you at 3am and your mind starts spinning out every worst case, let it spin without arguing. Say to yourself, this is shaking, not breaking, and let the surface churn while you lie still.
  2. If someone close to you picks a fight that goes after who you are, don't rush to defend the whole case. Stay in the room, answer the one thing that is actually true, and let the rest blow past you.
  3. Before a meeting that could go badly, or a call you've been dreading, take one slow breath in the hallway and remember that the outcome does not decide what you are worth. Then walk in anyway.

What in you is still standing after every hard week you've already lived through?

The self that is real cannot be cut, burned, soaked or dried. Storms pass over it the way weather passes over the sky, leaving the sky unchanged.
