Luke 22:9 Meaning They Said to Him

They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare?”

What does Luke 22:9 mean?

The question of where to make ready points inward to the chamber of the body that must be prepared for the higher meal, and the disciples asking are the ordinary faculties of a person seeking the site within where the inner communion can be held. The place is never a house in a city but a room in the self, the cleared and readied space of consciousness where the union of flesh and spirit is kept.

The preparing is the quieting and ordering of the inner faculties before the deeper table is set.

What is being asked, under the plain words, is which part of the self shall be made fit to receive, and the answer the whole account moves toward is a room already appointed within. The clear point is that the sacred meeting a person longs for takes place in an inner room, and the work is to ready that room rather than to search the world for a table.

Live Luke 22:9 today

  1. Make one small clearing today before you sit quietly: silence the phone, clear the table, open a window. Let the outside order help the inside order.
  2. Before you see someone who matters today, take sixty seconds alone first and put down whatever you were just doing. Arrive with room in you for them.
  3. When the day is loudest, take two minutes in a stairwell, a car, a bathroom, and let the noise settle. You are not escaping, you are making a space.

Am I waiting for a better place to find some quiet, or is there a room in me I have not made ready?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 11

The room is useful because of the empty space in it. What is cleared out is what makes it good for anything.

Zen

Before the guest arrives, sweep the floor. Preparation is most of the practice.

Hinduism · Upanishads

There is a small space within the heart, and what is sought is already there. The work is not to travel but to make that space ready.
