Luke 24:16 Meaning But Their Eyes Were Kept From Recognizing

But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

What does Luke 24:16 mean?

A mind can walk beside the very Love it longs for and fail to know it, because the sight it uses was trained by fear. The eyes are held not by any outside power but by the expectation of loss, which cannot picture the presence it has already grieved as gone.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind can walk beside the very Love it longs for and fail to know it, because the sight it uses was trained by fear. The eyes are held not by any outside power but by the expectation of loss, which cannot picture the presence it has already grieved as gone.

Recognition is not a matter of what stands before the mind but of which teacher it is looking with. As long as the eyes belong to the belief in death, love goes unrecognized even at arm's length. What holds the sight is the mind's own conviction, and only a change of teacher lets it finally see who has been there all along.

Eyes: the mind's way of seeing, held shut by the expectation of loss so that the love beside it goes unrecognized

  1. Pick one person you have quietly decided is a certain way, and spend a day watching for evidence against your own verdict. You will likely find some within an hour.
  2. At dinner or on a call, listen to someone close to you as though you had just met them. Your history with them is doing a lot of the hearing, and it can be set down.
  3. When you walk into a meeting braced for the usual thing, let yourself be wrong about how it will go. Decide what happened after it happens, not before.

Who is right in front of you that your expectations are keeping you from seeing?
