CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The ego's first move is to make the mind doubt what it is and then prove itself by feeding the body. If, it whispers, as though sonship were a claim to be tested rather than a fact already settled. It points to a stone and asks the mind to make it bread, to spend its given power on the body's want, to treat the flesh as the thing that must be satisfied for the self to be real.
A mind drawn into this argument has already conceded the ego's premise, that worth is unproven and the body is where it must be shown. The answer is not a greater feat but a refusal to accept the doubt at all, for what one is was never in question and needs no demonstration through bread.
Stone: the hard, lifeless matter the ego points to, the world's substance it dares the mind to make serve the body Bread: the body's want treated as the proof of worth, the ego's demand that spiritual power be spent feeding the flesh

The student is not asked to become the Self through effort. They are asked to stop believing they are something else, because what they are was never missing and cannot be achieved.
Hakuin wrote that all beings are already awake, the way water is already water. Looking for it elsewhere is like standing in water and crying out from thirst.
He reminded himself that his worth did not rest on what his body or his reputation could produce. Anything that depends on being demonstrated was never really his.
