Luke 4:4 · World English Bible

Luke 4:4 Meaning Jesus Answered Him

Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ”

What does Luke 4:4 mean?

The mind's true life does not come from what the body takes in but from what Love speaks to it. To answer the ego is to remember where being actually comes from, that the self is sustained by the changeless Word and not by the feeding of the flesh.

Christian Psychology

The mind's true life does not come from what the body takes in but from what Love speaks to it. To answer the ego is to remember where being actually comes from, that the self is sustained by the changeless Word and not by the feeding of the flesh. The body may eat and still the mind starve; the mind may hold to truth and want for nothing.

A mind convinced it lives by bread alone has mistaken the vehicle for the source. Its real nourishment is the constant thought of Love that upholds it whether the body is full or empty. Once this is seen, the ego's demand loses its force, because the thing it offered to satisfy was never what kept the mind alive.

Bread: the body's sustenance mistaken for the mind's, the outer feeding the ego offers as though life came from it Word of God: the changeless truth of Love that actually sustains the mind, the source of being the body cannot supply

Live Luke 4:4 today

  1. Sometime today, eat one meal without a screen in front of you. See whether the food was actually the thing you were reaching for.
  2. Ask someone close to you something real and listen to the whole answer without planning yours. You will likely walk away fed in a way the day had not been giving you.
  3. When you hit the late afternoon slump and start scrolling or snacking by reflex, sit still for two minutes first. The emptiness usually turns out not to be about food.

What have you been feeding that was never actually hungry?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 33

Those who know they have enough are already rich. Fullness turns out to be a thing you recognize, not a thing you acquire.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The hungriest of all hungers is craving itself. Feeding it keeps it alive, so peace comes from somewhere other than the next thing you take in.

Sufism · Rumi

He wrote about a kind of fullness that arrives when the usual appetites quiet down, a table set inside you that the body never had to carry in.
