Luke 4:6 Meaning The Devil Said to Him

The devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want.

What does Luke 4:6 mean?

The ego claims to own what it did not make and offers to hand the mind a power that was never its to give. It says the world's authority and splendor are in its keeping, dealt out to whom it chooses, and that the mind may have them for a price.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego claims to own what it did not make and offers to hand the mind a power that was never its to give. It says the world's authority and splendor are in its keeping, dealt out to whom it chooses, and that the mind may have them for a price. The whole offer rests on a lie about who holds the world, for the ego rules only a dream and can bestow only its own emptiness.

A mind tempted here is being asked to receive from separation what only Love creates. The glory promised is borrowed, the power counterfeit, and the giver holds title to nothing. To want what the ego offers is to prize a gift from a hand that owns none of it.

Live Luke 4:6 today

  1. When a job offer, a promotion or a purchase starts feeling like it would settle something inside you, ask quietly what it can actually deliver. Usually a smaller and more honest list than the one in your head.
  2. If someone dangles their approval or their connections over you, even gently, be friendly and do not reorganize yourself around it. What they are holding is smaller than it looks.
  3. Under pressure to compromise something you care about for an opportunity, slow the decision down by a day. Offers that cannot survive a night's sleep were never worth what they claimed.

What are you hoping somebody will hand you that they do not actually have?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

He separated what is yours from what is merely on loan. Position, money and reputation are handed out by circumstances that can take them back, so they were never anyone's to give you for keeps.

Tao Te Ching

The Tao gives rise to everything and claims none of it. Anything that loudly claims ownership of the world is telling you something about itself, not about the world.

Buddhism

Mara offers the Buddha rulership of the world, and the offer fails because the one making it holds nothing real. You cannot be bought with what the seller does not own.
