Luke 4:5 · World English Bible

Luke 4:5 Meaning The Devil

The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

What does Luke 4:5 mean?

The ego lifts the mind to a height and spreads the whole world before it, all at once and glittering, as though everything the eyes could want were laid out to be had. This is temptation by scope, the promise that the mind can possess the entire realm of appearances if it will only value what is shown.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego lifts the mind to a height and spreads the whole world before it, all at once and glittering, as though everything the eyes could want were laid out to be had. This is temptation by scope, the promise that the mind can possess the entire realm of appearances if it will only value what is shown. The vision is real as a picture and empty as a picture; it is the world of separation dressed to look like a prize.

A mind shown all the kingdoms feels the pull of having everything. Yet what is displayed is the sum of what the ego rules, images without substance, and to be dazzled by their sweep is to forget that not one of them holds anything the mind truly seeks.

Mountain: the vantage the ego raises the mind to, the height from which the whole realm of appearances is made to look like a prize Kingdoms of the world: the entire spread of outer things the ego offers, images without substance dressed to look like everything worth having

  2. When a friend tells you about something they bought or somewhere they went and you feel that small drop in your chest, say something genuinely glad instead. The drop passes faster than you expect.
  3. Standing in the checkout line or stuck in traffic with ads and feeds all around you, pick one real thing in front of you, the light, a face, your own breathing, and stay with it for a minute.

When everything is laid out in front of you, what are you actually looking for?

Too many colors blind the eye, too many sounds deafen the ear. The more that is spread out before you, the less you can actually see.

Sense pleasures are described as borrowed goods, dazzling while held and never owned. The problem is not that they are evil but that they are empty of the thing you went to them for.

He practiced looking at impressive things plainly, stripping away the glitter to see what they actually were. Most of what overwhelms us does so by its scale, not its substance.
