Luke 7:16 Meaning Fear Took Hold of All

Fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited his people!”

What does Luke 7:16 mean?

Even in the presence of an undoing this complete, the first response is fear, for the ego trembles at any evidence that its laws can be overturned. A mind long taught that death is final does not easily receive its reversal as good news; the old teacher stirs before the new one is chosen.

Even in the presence of an undoing this complete, the first response is fear, for the ego trembles at any evidence that its laws can be overturned. A mind long taught that death is final does not easily receive its reversal as good news; the old teacher stirs before the new one is chosen. Yet within the same crowd another voice rises to give thanks, and both responses live in every mind that meets a miracle.

What they call a visitation is simply love drawing near enough to be recognized. The mind that glorifies has stopped defending the story of abandonment and admitted that it was never left alone.

Prophet: the awakened teacher within, the presence that speaks for love and appears among the thoughts as their correction. People: the many separated thoughts of one mind, gathered to discover they were never abandoned by their Source.

When something long dead in a person wakes, the first response inside is fear, then slowly the fear turns to praise. This is the honest order of an inner awakening and of how those around a person meet it: dread comes before acceptance, the mind recoils before it can bless what has risen. What has actually risen is the prophet within, the divine intuition that had been silent and now speaks up in the crowd of the thoughts. The sense that God has visited is the felt nearness of that inner light once it stirs.

The prophet is the intuitive knowing within, and its rising is met first with alarm and then with reverence, the same 2 movements a person passes through when the deeper self begins at last to speak.

Live Luke 7:16 today

  1. When good news makes you uneasy, say both out loud: this is good, and I am scared. Let the two sit together instead of picking one.
  2. When someone changes for the better in a way that unsettles you, say the generous thing anyway. Congratulate them before your doubt has finished talking.
  3. In the meeting where the rule you relied on gets broken, let your first words be a question rather than a defense. Curiosity is how fear turns into thanks.

Tao Te Ching

When the old way is overturned, some laugh, some are frightened, and a few quietly begin to walk it. All three live in one person at once.

Zen

Good news that breaks your idea of how things work does not feel like good news at first. Fear and gratitude often arrive together at the door.
