Luke 7:46 Meaning You Didn’t Anoint My Head with Oil

You didn’t anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.

What does Luke 7:46 mean?

Two ways of meeting love are set side by side, and the difference is not in what was owed but in what was withheld. One mind offered the correct gesture and kept its distance, measuring, careful, giving nothing of itself.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Two ways of meeting love are set side by side, and the difference is not in what was owed but in what was withheld. One mind offered the correct gesture and kept its distance, measuring, careful, giving nothing of itself. Another poured out everything at the lowest place, holding nothing back, and that abandon is what love recognizes as its own.

The contrast is not about hospitality but about the willingness to give without counting the cost. Guilt makes a mind cautious, forever weighing whether the other deserves what it gives. Forgiveness gives as this woman gave, freely and wholly, because it has stopped keeping accounts. A mind that pours itself out has understood that love was never a transaction, and in that giving it receives everything.

Oil: the love a mind offers, either measured and withheld or poured out without reserve Feet: the lowest and most humble place, where love kneels without needing to be repaid or seen

Live Luke 7:46 today

  1. Do one thing today that nobody will know you did and that you will get nothing for. Let that be the whole of it.
  2. Give someone more than the situation requires: more time on the call, more help with the thing they did not quite ask for. See what it is like not to measure.
  3. When you catch yourself weighing whether someone deserves your effort, stop the calculation and just do the kind thing. The weighing was the problem, not them.

Where am I giving the correct amount when I could give without counting?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 81

The generous person gives and does not count. Keeping score is already a kind of withholding.

Bhagavad Gita

Act and give without clinging to the result. The giving that asks nothing back is the only kind that is free.

Sufism · Rumi

Love is not careful. It spends itself without first checking whether the spending was wise.
