Luke 8:16 · World English Bible

Luke 8:16 Meaning No One

No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a container, or puts it under a bed; but puts it on a stand, that those who enter in may see the light.

What does Luke 8:16 mean?

A mind that has remembered its own light does not hide it, for the light was never given to be kept in secret. Guilt would cover it, insisting that what shines within is dangerous and must be smothered under the body's small concerns or the darkness of sleep.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind that has remembered its own light does not hide it, for the light was never given to be kept in secret. Guilt would cover it, insisting that what shines within is dangerous and must be smothered under the body's small concerns or the darkness of sleep. Yet a light concealed helps no one, since a mind that hides its holiness teaches itself it has something to fear.

To set the light where all who enter can see it is simply to let love be shared, and in the sharing it is recognized as one's own. What is lit in a single mind was meant to lighten every mind that comes near, and only in giving it away is it fully kept.

Candle: the light of truth within the mind, the awareness of love that separation could dim but never put out Vessel: the body and its small concerns, used here to hide what the mind is afraid to shine Bed: the sleep of forgetfulness, the choice to dim awareness rather than let it be seen Candlestick: the raised place where light is shared, the mind that lets its holiness be given openly

SUFISM

Sufism

A person would never light a flame only to trap it under a jar. Yet the heart does exactly that, cloaking whatever good it holds out of fear or a strange false modesty, so the light warms no one who walks in.

The cure is to set the lamp high, letting kindness be plainly useful rather than smothered. The light itself was never the lamp's own; it was given so others entering the house could see. God shines through the uncovered heart the way brightness passes through clear glass, meant all along to reach the room.

Live Luke 8:16 today

  1. Say the kind thing you have been keeping to yourself. Send the text today, not when it feels less exposed.
  2. When someone asks how you are, give one true sentence instead of fine. Hiding the good parts teaches you they are unsafe.
  3. In a group chat or a meeting where praise is due to someone, say it out loud with their name in it. Light in a room helps everyone see.

What good in me am I keeping covered, and who is in the dark because of it?

Sufism · Rumi

A lamp hidden in a jar lights nothing, not even itself. What is given to you to shine was never meant to be guarded.

Buddhism · Metta practice

Kindness held inward stays theory. It becomes real only when it is turned outward, and the one who gives it receives it first.

Taoism

Water that refuses to move becomes a stagnant pool. It stays clean only by flowing on to others.
