Luke 8:18 · World English Bible

Luke 8:18 Meaning Be Careful Therefore How You Hear

Be careful therefore how you hear. For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he thinks he has.

What does Luke 8:18 mean?

How a person hears is the state he listens from, the assumption he holds as he receives the world. To him who has, meaning to the one already established in the feeling of possessing his wish, more of the same is added, for his world answers the state he occupies.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

How a person hears is the state he listens from, the assumption he holds as he receives the world. To him who has, meaning to the one already established in the feeling of possessing his wish, more of the same is added, for his world answers the state he occupies. The having is inward first; the world simply confirms it.

The other man hears from lack. Dwelling in the sense of absence, he watches even the little he seems to hold drain away, because a person cannot keep outwardly what he denies inwardly. What he seems to have is only borrowed against a state he never occupies. The self a person hears from decides what gathers to him and what leaves him. Held from the feeling of already having, a desire increases; held from want, it dissolves.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Two people can hear the same sentence and only one walks away richer, because only one of them was aiming.

Whatever a person aims attention at grows in size and in feeling, and whatever gets left out quietly stops existing for them, which is why hearing is a skill with a yield. What a person lets land becomes a belief, the belief sets the state they meet the next morning in, and the state decides what they do with it.

Loss here works by attrition. A truth held without attention thins into a memory of having once agreed with something, and the day a man reaches for it, there is nothing under his feet. Careless listening costs a person the understanding they were most certain they already owned.

Live Luke 8:18 today

  1. For one stretch today, hold a wish as already granted instead of still missing. Feel the difference in your chest between those two ways of carrying it.
  2. Listen to someone for five minutes without scanning for what is in it for you. Just receive what they are actually saying.
  3. When envy flashes at someone's post or someone's news, let it go by without feeding it. Return to the feeling of your own portion being enough.

What are you listening from today, having or wanting?

The cup must be empty to receive, and full to pour. What you are inwardly decides what flows toward you.

Buddhism

Craving feeds on itself and keeps the sense of lacking alive. Contentment is what lets things actually arrive.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

The rich person is the one who is content with his portion. Wealth is a state held, not a sum counted.
