The wish to call down fire on those who would not receive them is the mind reaching for attack the instant it feels rejected. Rejection stings because the ego reads it as proof of its own unworthiness, and rather than feel that guilt it hurls the guilt outward as a demand for destruction.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The wish to call down fire on those who would not receive them is the mind reaching for attack the instant it feels rejected. Rejection stings because the ego reads it as proof of its own unworthiness, and rather than feel that guilt it hurls the guilt outward as a demand for destruction. What looks like righteous anger is really the mind's own pain turned into a weapon, aimed at a mirror.
The appeal to a holy precedent only dresses the attack in borrowed authority. Fear always seeks permission to be cruel and calls it justice. But no one who is truly whole needs to consume another, for there is nothing outside to punish. The fire the mind wants to send out is the guilt it has not yet been willing to lay down.
Fire from heaven: the wish to attack disguised as justice, guilt hurled outward as destruction upon those the mind has judged Them: the rejecting figures who are really the mind's own guilt seen in a mirror, an enemy made of the mind's refusal to forgive itself

When you want to be harsh, what in you is actually hurting?
Holding a resentment is picking up a hot coal to throw at someone. The hand that burns first is yours.
The best answer to being wronged is to refuse to become like the one who wronged you. Revenge only passes the damage along.
If a boat bumps you and it is empty, you shout at no one. People are mostly empty boats, and most of your anger is about the person you imagine is steering.
