Mark 1:13 · World English Bible
He was there in the wilderness forty days tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals; and the angels were serving him.
Once a mind has heard that it is loved, the ego rises to argue it back into fear, and this is the whole of temptation: the voice of separation urging the mind to doubt the peace it just received. The wild beasts are the mind's own untamed thoughts, threatening only while they are believed, and the wilderness is the stretch of testing a mind must pass through as its old teacher makes its last appeals.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
Once a mind has heard that it is loved, the ego rises to argue it back into fear, and this is the whole of temptation: the voice of separation urging the mind to doubt the peace it just received. The wild beasts are the mind's own untamed thoughts, threatening only while they are believed, and the wilderness is the stretch of testing a mind must pass through as its old teacher makes its last appeals. Yet love is not absent from this struggle. The same peace that descended stays and serves, so the mind is never left to face fear alone.
So the desert of testing and the ministering of love occupy the same ground. A mind learns that temptation has no power except the belief it borrows, and that the loving teacher waits beside every doubt.
Wilderness: the stretch of testing the mind must cross, the barren ground where the old teacher makes its final case Wild beasts: the mind's own untamed and frightening thoughts, dangerous only for as long as they are believed real Angels: the presence of love that stays through the testing, the comfort that serves the mind while fear argues against it

PSYCHOANALYSIS
Going alone into empty country is a picture of turning inward, away from the crowd and its comforts. There a person meets the tempter, which is really their own dark side, the wishes and weaknesses they never admit in daylight.
The wild animals are the raw instincts, the animal in us that cannot be argued away and must simply be met face to face. Yet the same lonely place holds help. When a person stops running from what lives inside them, something steadying rises to meet them, and the desert that looked like punishment becomes the place where they are fed.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
Before a person can lead, he has to go out into the chaos alone and face what lives there. The wilderness strips away the crowd and the comforts, and what remains is the confrontation with temptation and with the animal in oneself. The wild beasts are outside and inside at once. To be ministered to by angels afterward is the reward for enduring that exposure rather than fleeing it.
Meaning is earned in the desert, not in the safe town. A man who has met the worst in himself and held his ground returns with an authority the sheltered never acquire. Descend into the difficulty on purpose. You come back with something you could not have been given.
Christian Psychology lens
Which frightening thought have I been treating as a fact?
The mind is restless and hard to hold, flickering wherever it likes. Guarded rather than obeyed, it becomes the one thing that brings you peace.
Nothing has power to disturb you except your own judgment that it should. The frightening thought is only a thought until you agree with it.
The untrained mind is restless and will argue with you, but the same self that watches it is steady and never leaves. You are not abandoned to the struggle, you are the quiet in it.
