Mark 1:22 Meaning They Were Astonished at His Teaching

They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes.

What does Mark 1:22 mean?

There is a teaching that carries its own certainty because it comes from what is true, and the mind knows the difference the moment it hears it. The ego quotes and cites and leans on what others have said, forever borrowing a conviction it does not have.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is a teaching that carries its own certainty because it comes from what is true, and the mind knows the difference the moment it hears it. The ego quotes and cites and leans on what others have said, forever borrowing a conviction it does not have. Love speaks from itself, and that directness is what astonishes, for the mind recognizes an authority it had forgotten was its own.

The wonder is really self-recognition. When truth is spoken plainly, the mind feels the contrast with every anxious secondhand belief it had accepted before. What sounds like authority is only love speaking without fear, and the astonishment is the mind waking to how tired it had grown of fear's endless hedging.

Scribes: the ego's borrowed authority, the part of the mind that can only cite and repeat and never speaks with the certainty of what is true

True words are not showy and showy words are not true. The teaching that lands does not need ornament or a chain of names behind it.
