Mark 1:23 · World English Bible
Immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,
A part of this man had split off from the rest of him. Shut out of his conscious life, it did not vanish.
From the Psychoanalysis reading below.
The same verse, read by one tradition.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
A part of this man had split off from the rest of him. Shut out of his conscious life, it did not vanish. It gathered its own energy and began to act on its own, like a second self that felt foreign to him.
The setting matters. This happens inside the synagogue, the center of order and shared belief, the moment a figure of wholeness enters. Something complete stands before a divided man, and the part he had shut away can no longer stay hidden. It cries out because that wholeness has reached it and pulled it into the open.
Psychoanalysis lens
Which part of myself have I been treating as an intruder?
Treat every arrival as a guest at the door, even the dark ones, even shame. Each was sent for a reason, and the house is cleared by welcoming them rather than barring them.
Where there is otherness, there is fear; the self is one, and dread begins the moment a part of it is treated as a stranger. When the stranger is recognized, the crying stops.
The sage turns no part away and so nothing is wasted. What is rejected is not gone, it simply works outside your knowing.
