Mark 10:43 Meaning But It Shall Not Be So Among

But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.

What does Mark 10:43 mean?

The mind still dreaming of separation measures greatness by how many it can stand over, for the ego feeds on comparison and calls dominion strength. This is spoken to those who would trade that dream for another way of seeing, where the wish to rule is recognized as the wish to be apart, and quietly set down.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind still dreaming of separation measures greatness by how many it can stand over, for the ego feeds on comparison and calls dominion strength. This is spoken to those who would trade that dream for another way of seeing, where the wish to rule is recognized as the wish to be apart, and quietly set down.

To serve, then, is not a lowering but a correction. The mind that gives itself to others has stopped defending a private self, and in that giving remembers it was never separate from the ones it serves. Greatness turns out to be nothing more than this joining, the willingness to see no one beneath oneself.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The mind that wants to be great is measuring itself against everyone around it. It needs others to be smaller so that it can feel larger, and this hunger never rests. Underneath the wanting hides a fear of being no one.

When the craving to rise above other people falls away, something opens. A person begins to serve, not to climb but because nothing is left to prove. He gives without keeping score. The greatness he was chasing turns out to be the very thing he does when he stops chasing it, which is to help the people in front of him.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Greatness inside a person is not the swollen self that climbs over the rest but the faculty that serves the whole body, the awareness bending low to tend every part instead of ruling from above. The minister is the servant current of consciousness that flows down into the limbs and organs to feed them, and it is this lowered, serving motion that makes a person whole.

Within the temple of the body, true stature belongs to the part of the mind that pours itself into the lower members, nourishing and lifting them. A person grows large not by rising over the flesh but by descending into it with care until no part of the body is left unserved.

Live Mark 10:43 today

  1. Sometime today, do one small thing no one will ever know you did. Wipe the counter, refill the paper, reply to the email that was not yours to answer, and let it stay unsigned.
  2. In your next conversation, give the other person the last word on purpose. Ask one more question instead of making your point, and watch how little you actually lose.
  3. When you feel yourself about to pull rank, in a meeting, a group chat, a line at the store, pause for one breath and ask what this person needs rather than what you are owed.

Where today am I holding a little height I do not actually need?

The river reaches the sea because it keeps to the low ground. The one who leads well stays underneath, and so holds everyone up without anyone feeling pressed down.

The aspiration is not to rise above others but to stay until every being is free. Putting yourself last turns out to be the end of the one who was keeping score.
