CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When fear demands to know by what right love acts, it is not seeking truth but a way to dismiss it. The mind ruled by the ego wants credentials it can weigh and reject, some outer proof it can stand in judgment over. Love does not answer such a challenge on its own terms; it turns the question back, because the real issue is never authority but which teacher the mind has already decided to serve.

The answer cannot be given to a mind that has closed against it. Where the questioner has secretly resolved to condemn, no proof will satisfy, and the truth waits on a willingness that must come first.

  1. Catch yourself asking a question you already know you will reject the answer to. Ask instead what you would have to give up if the answer turned out to be true.
  2. In your next disagreement, drop the demand for credentials and ask the person what they actually want. The conversation under the argument is usually the only one worth having.
  3. When someone online or in a group chat is clearly not asking to understand but to dismiss, do not supply the proof. Let the thread go quiet and keep your peace for something real.

Am I asking because I want to know, or because I want a reason to stop listening?

Zen

Ask a question with your cup already full and nothing can be poured in. The answer waits on an empty cup, not a better argument.

Tao Te Ching 56

Those who know do not need to win the debate; those who need to win do not know. The real exchange happens below the level of proof.

Sufism · Rumi

You cannot argue someone into love, and you cannot argue your way into it either. The door opens from the side of wanting it open.
