Mark 11:30 Meaning The Baptism of John—was It From Heaven

The baptism of John—was it from heaven, or from men? Answer me.

What does Mark 11:30 mean?

One question exposes where the whole difficulty lies: does the mind trace what is holy to its true source, or reduce everything to a merely human affair it can manage and dismiss? The cleansing that turns a mind toward truth is either the working of love or the invention of men, and how the mind answers reveals which teacher it has chosen.

The fearful mind will not answer honestly, because either answer costs it something it means to keep. To call the cleansing heavenly is to be bound by what it points to; to call it human is to stand exposed as one who never wanted the truth at all.

John: the awakening within the mind that prepares it for truth, the herald whose call for cleansing points beyond itself to its source in love Baptism: the inner washing that turns a mind from fear toward truth, either received from love or dismissed as the work of men

  1. Find the one question about your own life you keep rephrasing so you never have to answer it. Answer it plainly, in one sentence, even if only in your head.
  2. When someone asks you something direct and you feel the urge to hedge, give them the real answer instead. The cost of saying it is almost always smaller than the cost of the hedging.
  3. In a work conversation where everyone is talking around the actual issue, say the simple true thing once, calmly, and then stop talking. You do not have to defend it.

Which question am I avoiding because the answer would ask something of me?

Bhagavad Gita

An honest answer about where you stand is worth more than a clever one. Evasion only prolongs the confusion you are trying to escape.

Stoicism · Seneca

We hide from the plain question because the answer would commit us. Honesty is cheap to speak and expensive to avoid.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Say little and do much. A careful speech that commits to nothing protects nothing worth keeping.
