Mark 12:30 · World English Bible

Mark 12:30 Meaning You Shall Love the Lord Your God

you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.

What does Mark 12:30 mean?

To love with all of oneself is not a strain the mind must produce but the state it returns to when nothing is held back for fear. The ego keeps a portion in reserve, a guarded corner where it can still doubt and defend, and that withheld fraction is where suffering lives.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To love with all of oneself is not a strain the mind must produce but the state it returns to when nothing is held back for fear. The ego keeps a portion in reserve, a guarded corner where it can still doubt and defend, and that withheld fraction is where suffering lives.

Heart, soul, mind, and strength are not four faculties to recruit but one undivided will named four ways. When a mind stops dividing itself against love, it finds it was always whole, and that wholeness is the one thing it ever truly wanted.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

This is not a command to work up a feeling. Feelings come and go, and no effort of will can force one into being on demand. What is pointed to instead is total presence, the whole of your heart, mind, and strength gathered into this moment rather than scattered across memory and anticipation.

Most of us live partially, a fraction of attention here, the rest lost in thought about somewhere else. To love with all of you is to stop that fragmentation and bring full attention into contact with what is, since the ground of being can only be met by a being that is fully here, not one divided between past and future.

SUFISM

Asked which command outranks the rest, the answer gathers the whole person into one aim: heart, soul, mind, and strength poured toward a single love. A divided heart spends itself on a hundred smaller loves and keeps a thin slice for God. The daily work is drawing those scattered streams back into one channel.

A spring feeds many brooks, but the brooks were only ever the spring flung outward. Love God with everything and the lesser loves are not lost; each is lit from within and returned to its origin.

Live Mark 12:30 today

  1. Pick one thing you will do today with your whole attention, washing the dishes, walking to the car, drinking your coffee. No second screen, no planning the next thing.
  2. Be fully in one conversation today, phone out of sight and out of your hand. Let the other person have all of you for ten minutes instead of most of you for an hour.
  3. In the next thing that scares you a little, find the part you are keeping in reserve so you can say you did not really try. Put that part in too.

Which corner of yourself are you still holding back, and what do you think it is protecting?

The way is not reached by adding effort but by letting go of what is in the way. Doing less and less, nothing is left undone.

Sufism · Rumi

You are a drop holding back from the sea, afraid of disappearing, when the sea is what you are made of. Give the whole drop and nothing is lost.

Zen · Suzuki Roshi

When you do something, do it completely, with your whole body and mind. The half that holds itself back is where the trouble lives.
