Mark 12:9 · World English Bible

Mark 12:9 Meaning What Therefore Will the Lord

What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give the vineyard to others.

What does Mark 12:9 mean?

The question sounds like a threat of vengeance, but read in the mind it is the promise of correction. What the lord destroys is not a person; it is the ego itself, the false claim that seized the ground and shut love out.

The question sounds like a threat of vengeance, but read in the mind it is the promise of correction. What the lord destroys is not a person; it is the ego itself, the false claim that seized the ground and shut love out. When truth returns to the mind, the illusion of separate ownership simply cannot stand, and the field is given to a way of seeing that will bear fruit at last.

So the ending is not punishment but restoration. The mind is not condemned; the thing that condemned it is undone, and awareness is handed to the gentleness that was always meant to keep it.

Live Mark 12:9 today

  1. Pick one thing today you have been gripping hard, a project, a plan, an outcome. Say out loud that you do not control it, then do the next small piece of work anyway, hands a little looser.
  2. In your next conversation, give up the need to be right. Let the other person have the last word on something small and feel how little it actually costs you.
  3. When a message or an email lands that makes your chest tighten, put the phone face down for two minutes. What gets undone in those two minutes is only the panic, not you.

What would you still have if the part of you that insists on being in charge simply stood down?

When things reach their end they return to their root, and whoever returns to that stillness is restored. Nothing is destroyed in the returning except the striving.

The first arrow is what happens; the second is the story we fire into ourselves about it. Stop firing the second and the suffering ends without anyone being punished.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You never owned the things you clutched, only the use of them for a while. Loosening that false claim is not loss, it is seeing clearly.
