Mark 3:25 · World English Bible

Mark 3:25 Meaning If a House Is Divided Against Itself

If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

What does Mark 3:25 mean?

A mind that holds two masters at once, keeping faith with fear while it reaches toward love, has set itself against itself, and nothing built that way endures. The ego is that very division, the belief that the self can be split from its Source and still remain whole, and every conflict a person suffers is this one split played out in a thousand quarrels.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind that holds two masters at once, keeping faith with fear while it reaches toward love, has set itself against itself, and nothing built that way endures. The ego is that very division, the belief that the self can be split from its Source and still remain whole, and every conflict a person suffers is this one split played out in a thousand quarrels.

So the collapse foretold here is not a punishment but a mercy. What cannot stand is only the illusion of a self at war, and when the mind stops trying to serve two teachers and chooses one, the house it thought was falling was never its true home. Only the divided thing ends, and what ends was never real.

House: the whole structure of a mind, the dwelling of thought that cannot hold together while it is turned against itself

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A house at war with itself falls. The mind is such a house. It stands only when its aims are ranked, one above another, so that the deepest want governs the momentary one. We perceive in accordance with our aim. Split the aim, and perception splinters with it. The same object beckons and repels at once, and the will is torn between doors it cannot both enter.

A person who wants two contradictory things sees a contradictory world. A household needs a head, and so does a soul. The parts that get exiled, the wants driven into the cellar and disowned, do not die down there. They starve the whole and weaken it, and the strength that should have met tomorrow is spent fighting the tenant upstairs. Set the house in order by deciding what rules. A divided aim builds a divided life.

  1. Pick the thing you have been doing while wishing you were doing something else, and just do it fully for ten minutes. The split attention was the hard part, not the task.
  2. If you are being one way with a friend and another way behind their back, close the gap today, kindly and honestly. You will feel how much that double life was costing you.
  3. When you are stretched thin and feel like you are coming apart, stop and name what you actually want here, one thing. Collapse usually means two plans were fighting, and only one of them was yours.

Which two things am I trying to be at once, and which one is actually mine?

When you walk, walk. When you sit, sit. Do not wobble, because the wobbling is the whole of the suffering.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The sense of being cut off from the whole is the one wound under all the others. Heal it and the thousand quarrels lose their root.

The reed cries because it was cut from the reed bed, and every song of longing is that one separation singing. End the split and the ache ends with it.
