Mark 4:21 Meaning He Said to Them

He said to them, “Is the lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn’t it put on a stand?

What does Mark 4:21 mean?

The light within a mind was never meant to be hidden, and the ego's whole labor is to cover it, to press it under fear and shame as though its shining were dangerous. A mind that buries its own light believes it is protecting itself, when really it is only agreeing to sit in a darkness that was never necessary.

Christian Psychology

The light within a mind was never meant to be hidden, and the ego's whole labor is to cover it, to press it under fear and shame as though its shining were dangerous. A mind that buries its own light believes it is protecting itself, when really it is only agreeing to sit in a darkness that was never necessary. The light is not made brighter by being lifted up; it is simply allowed to do what light does, which is to give itself away.

What covers the light is always a choice, and so is the raising of it. Set where it belongs, the light shows the mind that it was never small or unworthy, and by shining it lets every other mind see its own light as well.

Candle: the light of truth within the mind, its innocence and worth, meant to be shown and not concealed. Bushel: the ego's covering of worry and worth measured in things, laid over the light to keep it hidden. Bed: the mind's retreat into comfort and sleep, another way the light is smothered rather than let shine. Candlestick: the rightful place of the light lifted up and freely given, where it blesses the mind and all it touches.

Live Mark 4:21 today

  1. Say out loud, alone, one good thing about yourself that you usually keep quiet about. Let it be true for a minute without softening it.
  2. Tell someone today the kind thing you were going to leave unsaid. Send the message instead of drafting it and deleting it.
  3. In the meeting where you usually stay silent to be safe, offer the thought you actually have. Say it plainly and let it land however it lands.

What am I keeping covered because I decided it was too much, or not enough?

The light within is not yours alone to hide. To act from it openly, without shrinking and without display, is the offering itself.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? Your own worth and your giving of it are not two separate things.

Whatever anyone does or says, I must be emerald, and keep my color. The jewel does not dim itself because no one is looking, and it does not boast because someone is.
