PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The man lived among the tombs, cut off from the living, and something not himself had taken hold of him and spoke through him. This is a real condition of the soul. A buried force, denied and pushed down for long enough, can gather its own strength and seize a person from within.

When that happens, the man is no longer steering his own life; the thing inside him is. He haunts the graveyards of his own past because that is where the denied force lives. He can only be freed when that force is faced directly, called by its name, and drawn back into the daylight of a whole life.

  1. Think of the mood that keeps running you, the flash of anger, the old envy, the dread at 2am. Give it a plain name out loud, just once, instead of letting it drive the day unnamed.
  2. Tell one person you trust about the thing you have been circling for months and never said. Saying it in daylight to a real face drains most of its grip.
  3. When you feel yourself being taken over, the voice rising, the hands shaking, say quietly in your head, this is the old thing again, not me. Then step outside, or into the hallway, until you are the one steering again.

What have I been keeping out in the dark, and what would it cost me to let it come inside?

Tibetan Buddhism

The wrathful figures painted on temple walls are not demons to be destroyed but forces to be recognized and taken into the whole. What is faced and named becomes a protector, what is fled becomes a haunting.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi taught that the wound is where the light enters, and that the part of you crying in the dark is asking to be let into the house. Shut it out and it howls, invite it in and it speaks.
