Mark 5:22 Meaning Behold

Behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, came; and seeing him, he fell at his feet,

What does Mark 5:22 mean?

Jairus, whose name opens as "he will give light" or "whom God enlightens," is the ruling faculty of the ordered mind, the part of a person that has governed the assembly of thoughts by law and structure. That he falls at the feet is the whole meaning: the reasoning self that once presided now bows to the higher consciousness, laying its authority at the lowest point of the body where the current enters and understanding begins.

The synagogue is the gathered congregation of a person's thoughts, the inner assembly convened under rule and habit. Its ruler coming forward and going down marks the moment the enlightening mind recognizes something above its own command and yields to it. The one who was in charge of the ordered thinking kneels, and in kneeling the light his name promises is released, no longer ruling but surrendering so the deeper power can work.

  1. Next time you are certain you are right about something small, a route, a fact, a way of doing a task, let it go without defending it. See what the quiet feels like.
  2. Ask someone you usually explain things to what they think, then stay silent long enough that they actually answer. Being the one in charge of the conversation is the thing you set down.
  3. In a meeting where you have the stronger position, say plainly that you do not know. Authority held loosely gets more done than authority gripped.

Where are you still running the room when you could be learning from it?

The hard and rigid breaks, the soft and yielding survives. What bends is closer to life than what insists on holding its shape.

The teacher poured tea until the cup overflowed, because a cup already full can receive nothing. The mind sure of its own authority has no room left for what it came to learn.
