Byādhi: Sickness Sickness stands in the first truth beside birth, aging, and death, something no arrangement of a life keeps out. Twelve years of bleeding is the ordinary condition of having a body, simply running long. Everyone pressing around her in that crowd carries some version of it, most of them just earlier in the story.

Salla: The dart Being struck by a dart is the old image for pain, where the one hit adds a second dart by how they meet the first. Her healers put that second dart in by hand: she came for relief and went home sorer, poorer, and more frightened each time. Pain seldom arrives alone, and what gets done about it is often the larger half.

Taṇhā: Craving Thirst is the engine that keeps a search running long after the search stops working. Every coin that left her hand bought another promise, and the promise is what moved her to the next door. Drinking salt water is the familiar picture: each cup answers the thirst for a moment and deepens it, which is how a woman with means becomes a woman with nothing.

Anatta: Not self A body is unowned, which is why it takes no instruction. If it were hers the way her purse was hers, twelve years of paying and obeying and enduring would have bought one command: let this stop. It kept its own course through every regimen anyway.

Anicca: Impermanence Nothing holds still, an illness included. She paid for change in one direction and received it in the other, no better sliding into worse. Change moves whether or not it is wanted, and it owes no one an improvement.

Saṃvega: Urgency The shock that turns a person toward the path tends to arrive when the usual options are gone. Broke, worse, and out of physicians, she is standing exactly where it lands. Having nothing left is what freed her to push through a crowd for the edge of a coat.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Bankruptcy proves the vehicles were wrong; it proves nothing at all about whether the need was worth chasing.

Desperation is a state, and a state decides what a person can see, so twelve years inside it means twelve years of a world where help has only one shape. Each physician was a bet that health and belonging could be purchased, and each lost bet took the coin while leaving the drive at full strength, because the drive was never made of coin.

The need she could not shake is the reason she was still reaching when Jesus came within arm's length of her. A person whose need has bankrupted them has not lost the need, and where they aim it next decides whether the emptying bought them anything at all.

Live Mark 5:26 today

  1. Look honestly at one thing you've been paying for, chasing or scrolling toward for months with nothing to show. Ask whether the search is still working or whether it just keeps renewing itself.
  2. If someone you love is sick or struggling and nothing you try is helping, stop trying to produce a result for one visit. Just be there with them and let that be the whole purpose of the hour.
  3. When your body refuses to cooperate, tired, aching, wired at midnight, stop issuing commands to it. Treat it as weather you're living in rather than a machine that's disobeying you.

What are you still buying promises from, long after they stopped delivering anything?

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are up to us and some are not, and the body is firmly in the second group. Peace begins when you stop handing orders to what was never taking orders.

Tao Te Ching 29

The world is not something you can hold and shape by force; grab at it and you lose it. Years of effort against the grain of a thing often leave you further back than you started.

Hinduism · Katha Upanishad

Desire is not satisfied by getting what it wants, any more than a fire goes out when you feed it. Each answer makes the wanting bigger.
