Mark 6:4 Meaning Jesus Said to Them

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house.”

What does Mark 6:4 mean?

The mind honors truth most easily where it costs nothing, at a distance, in a stranger, in a teaching not yet asked to touch its own life. Bring the same truth home, into the country and kin and house of the self one thinks one knows, and the ego resists, for here recognition would require change of the very mind that guards its borders.

Familiarity is the ego's favorite disguise for contempt, a way of saying it has already measured what stands before it and found nothing that need disturb it.

The teacher within is dishonored not by enemies but by the parts of the mind most certain they already understand. What is closest is where love is refused first, because it is there that being wrong would cost the most.

Prophet: the voice of truth within the mind, the awakened teacher who speaks for love. Country: the settled territory of a mind's own habits, where the familiar refuses to be surprised by what it has already judged. Kin: the near thoughts a mind counts as its own, the beliefs so close they are trusted without examination. House: the inner dwelling of the self, the place where truth is resisted hardest because there acceptance would change everything.

  1. Pick the person you think you have fully figured out, maybe a parent or a sibling, and let them surprise you once today. Listen as if you just met.
  2. In a conversation with someone close, catch the moment you start finishing their sentence in your head, and stop. Let them say the rest themselves.
  3. When a familiar voice at work gives advice you usually dismiss, try taking it seriously for ten minutes before you decide. Being right is not worth that much.
