What does Mark 7:11 mean?

The ego is endlessly clever at using holy language to excuse the withholding of love. Here a mind names its gift sacred precisely so it need not give it, dressing refusal as devotion and calling the closing of the heart an offering to God.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego is endlessly clever at using holy language to excuse the withholding of love. Here a mind names its gift sacred precisely so it need not give it, dressing refusal as devotion and calling the closing of the heart an offering to God. What is owed to the nearest bond is kept back under a pious word, because guilt would rather look generous than actually be kind.

No rule can make the withdrawal of love into a virtue. The One who is truly served is served by the giving itself, not by the clever exemption from it. Release the word that guards the hand, and the gift becomes real the moment it is finally allowed to flow to the one before you.

Father or mother: the nearest bonds of the mind, the immediate calls to love that guilt learns to evade. Corban, a gift: the holy label the ego lays over its refusal, devotion named so that giving may be withheld.

Live Mark 7:11 today

  1. Think of a call or a visit you have been putting off with a good reason. Make the reason smaller than the person and do it today.
  2. The next time a family member asks something of you and you feel the excuse forming, give the thing instead. Twenty minutes of real attention beats a well argued no.
  3. When you are stretched thin and someone needs you, resist dressing your refusal in principle. Either say plainly that you cannot right now, or give what you can without the speech.

Whose claim on my love am I turning down with a reason that sounds better than it is?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · Analects

Fine words and a careful face can hide an unkind heart. Virtue shows up in how you treat the person in front of you, not in how you describe yourself.

Judaism · Talmud

A person who gives with a cold face has given less than the one who gives nothing but speaks warmly. The giving and the warmth belong together.

Sufism · Rumi

There is no holy reason to close your hand. Love is proven in the opening, not in the explanation for staying shut.
