Mark 7:10 Meaning For Moses Said

For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother;’ and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’

What does Mark 7:10 mean?

The severity of the ancient penalty startles modern ears, yet it measures how much rests on this. To honour your parents is to accept that you did not create yourself, that you stand on the labor and sacrifice of those who came before.

The severity of the ancient penalty startles modern ears, yet it measures how much rests on this. To honour your parents is to accept that you did not create yourself, that you stand on the labor and sacrifice of those who came before. Contempt for them is contempt for the structure that made your existence possible.

Someone who curses his origins wars against his own foundation. He saws the branch he sits on. Honour asks not for the pretence that they were flawless, but for gratitude at being here at all, and the humility to build on what was handed down.

Live Mark 7:10 today

  1. Sometime today, think back on one ordinary thing a parent or grandparent did for you that you never thanked them for. A ride, a packed lunch, a bill they quietly paid. Let it land instead of brushing past it.
  2. Send the text or make the call you keep putting off, and keep it simple. "I was thinking about you today" is enough. If your family story is hard, pick whoever actually carried you, an aunt, a teacher, an old boss, and thank that person instead.
  3. When someone at work or in a group chat starts tearing down the people who built the thing you are standing in, do not pile on. You can say the old way has problems without sneering at the people who got you this far.

What in my life came to me through someone else's work that I have been treating as if I made it myself?

Confucius · Analects

The root of character is how a person treats parents and elders. Get that wrong and nothing built on top of it holds.

Tao Te Ching

The stream remembers its spring. Whoever keeps hold of the source stays whole, and whoever cuts himself off from it dries up.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You did not choose your parents, your body, or your era. Your work is to play the part you were handed well, not to resent the hand that passed it to you.
