Mark 7:8 Meaning For You Set Aside the Commandment
“For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.”

Mark 7:8 · World English Bible
“For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things.”
The mind clings to the outer ritual and lets the inner law fall from its hands, because cleaning the surface is easier than changing the teacher within. To scrub the cup while the heart stays hard is the ego's favorite bargain: it offers effort where nothing is asked and withholds the one thing that heals, the willingness to think differently.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The mind clings to the outer ritual and lets the inner law fall from its hands, because cleaning the surface is easier than changing the teacher within. To scrub the cup while the heart stays hard is the ego's favorite bargain: it offers effort where nothing is asked and withholds the one thing that heals, the willingness to think differently. Guilt is comforted by busyness that never touches its cause.
What God asks is a shift of mind, and no amount of outward washing can stand in for it. The vessel is not the body or the object but the mind itself, and it is cleaned only from inside. Set the surface labor down, and the correction that was always available is finally allowed to work.
Pots and cups: the outer forms and observances the mind polishes, the surface it keeps clean to avoid cleansing the mind itself.

ESOTERIC
The outer scrubbing of pots and cups is religion turned entirely to the surface of the vessel, the body cleaned and ruled by inherited custom while the inner command, the direct law written in a person's own depth, is set down and ignored. To hold the tradition of men is to keep the shell of practice and lose the living instruction that was meant to change what the vessel actually contains.
The pot and the cup are the body as a container, and the whole error is treating that container as if rinsing its outside were the work. What matters is the substance held within, the state of awareness, and that is reached not by handed-down ritual but by the command that speaks from the divine center itself, which mere custom has quietly replaced.
Pots and cups: the body as a vessel, judged and cleaned only on its outer surface Washing: the inherited ritual worked on the shell of a person while the inner substance is left untouched
Christian Psychology lens
What am I keeping spotless on the outside so I never have to look inside?
The way forward is by subtraction, not addition. You arrive by setting things down, not by piling more on.
Polishing the outside of the bowl forever will not make it hold water. The work that matters is on the inside, and it is quieter.
Action done for show, however correct in form, binds the one who does it. Only action offered from a changed heart sets a person free.
