Matthew 1:23 · World English Bible

Matthew 1:23 Meaning Behold

“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel;” which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”

What does Matthew 1:23 mean?

The mind untouched by the belief in separation is called a virgin here, and out of that untouched purity comes the one truth the ego cannot conceive, that God has never been absent. Every fear rests on the hidden conviction that the source of love withdrew and left the self alone to defend itself.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind untouched by the belief in separation is called a virgin here, and out of that untouched purity comes the one truth the ego cannot conceive, that God has never been absent. Every fear rests on the hidden conviction that the source of love withdrew and left the self alone to defend itself. The name given to the child overturns exactly this: not God far off and offended, but God with us, present and unbroken.

What is born, then, is the end of the sense of abandonment. The mind discovers it was never on its own, that the love it feared it had lost was quietly here the whole time, and this remembered nearness is itself the salvation the name announces.

Virgin: the mind still innocent of the belief in separation, the pure ground from which truth is conceived Son: the awakened awareness brought forth from that purity, carrying the remembrance of God's nearness Emmanuel: the recognition that the source of love was never absent, God present within the mind that feared itself alone

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The virgin is every person, who conceives a desire without knowing how the conception happens. The child is the state assumed, taking form in the unseen before it appears; the womb is the skull, where the wish is carried. Nothing outside plants it. A person accepts a feeling as belonging to himself, and that acceptance is the conception, quiet and unwitnessed.

The son's name is Emmanuel, God with us, because the power that brings the desire to birth is not far off but your own awareness of being. To name the child is to state its nature, and its nature is your imagination present and creating. The desire felt as already accomplished grows within until it is delivered into fact. A person carries a state to term by dwelling in it as done, and what he conceived in the dark is born as God present in him.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The virgin who conceives is the pure, untouched soul-substance in a person, the receptive inner nature not yet mixed with the outer world, and out of that unspent purity the higher self is born. A son brought forth from a virgin is the awakened consciousness rising from a nature kept whole, not generated by the lower drives but conceived directly from the immaculate ground within. The name Emmanuel, opened in Greek and Hebrew as the divine presence joined to the human, states what the birth is: the higher life is not a distant power to be reached for but a presence already lodged in the body, the sacred current dwelling inside the flesh it took. This is the inner nativity, the deepest life quickening in a person from its own pure source.

The virgin: the pure untouched soul-substance within a person, the receptive inner nature not yet mixed with the outer world. The son: the awakened consciousness born from that whole nature, the higher self conceived from the immaculate ground within. PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The name Immanuel, "God with us," states the heart of becoming whole: the whole, true self, the sense of God living within, is not a far-off idea to chase outside. It is a presence born at the very center of who you are.

The virgin who carries the divine child is the deep feminine, the old pattern through which our depths deliver what willpower alone cannot make. Joseph's word comes in a dream, the balancing voice from within that slips past reason's control. At this threshold the old inner stance is ready to dissolve, and the mind hands over its meaning in the form of a child. What was always true is now said plainly: the wholeness people seek in a distant heaven already lives inside them.

SUFISM

Sufism

A promise older than the people who first heard it comes down to a single child, and his name is the whole message: God with us. The heart's oldest fear is that it stands alone, that heaven is a locked door far overhead. Here the door turns out to be a face.

The cure begins when a person stops treating God as a distant idea and remembers He is nearer than the next breath, until the world reads as company and not empty space.

  1. When you wake and reach for your phone, wait a moment before you unlock it. Let the quiet before the first message remind you that you are not being left alone to handle the day.
  2. Next time someone close to you goes quiet, in a text thread or across the dinner table, resist filling the silence with a story about being forgotten. Ask them a real question instead, and let the answer be ordinary.
  3. In a meeting where you feel you have to defend yourself, drop your shoulders and let one breath go by before you speak. The need to guard yourself comes from feeling alone in the room, and you are not.

Where in your day do you act as though you are on your own, when you are not?

The Tao is never far from anything, since it is the ground every thing stands on. You cannot step outside it to look for it, and the search itself hides how close it already is.

The self you take to be small and alone is not separate from the whole. What you have been calling "I" and what you have been calling "God" were never two things standing apart.
