Matthew 1:24 · World English Bible
Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;
Joseph waking from sleep is the everyday self bowing to the whole, true self, the sense of God that broke through as a dream and came back as a command. The angel makes visible what reason alone cannot settle.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
Joseph waking from sleep is the everyday self bowing to the whole, true self, the sense of God that broke through as a dream and came back as a command.
The angel makes visible what reason alone cannot settle. A buried wish that "wrought a powerful transformation" inside a person through a shining figure shows the same movement: what the waking mind was ready to push down is worked through by the dream and handed back as a calling. The wholeness of man and woman that left Adam was kept as the "woman's seed," and Joseph is asked to shelter it. To take Mary to himself is the joining of opposites, a man taking in rather than casting out what is larger than him, making room for the child, the sign of the whole self.

What have you already been told, in a quiet moment, that you have not yet agreed to?
The sage does not force his own plan onto the world. He yields to the way things actually move, and in that yielding he becomes able to act rightly.
Some things are given to us to arrange and some are simply handed to us. Wisdom is taking up what has been handed to you and carrying it well, instead of arguing with it.
The night brings counsel the daylight mind refuses. What arrives while you sleep is often the thing you were avoiding awake.
