Matthew 10:40 Meaning He Who Receives You Receives Me

He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me.

What does Matthew 10:40 mean?

To welcome another is to welcome what sent him, because minds are joined and cannot be met one at a time. The ego insists on separate encounters, a self here greeting a stranger there, but every genuine reception opens onto the same source, and the one who receives a messenger of love has already received the love that speaks through him.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To welcome another is to welcome what sent him, because minds are joined and cannot be met one at a time. The ego insists on separate encounters, a self here greeting a stranger there, but every genuine reception opens onto the same source, and the one who receives a messenger of love has already received the love that speaks through him. There are not many gates to God but one, and it stands open in each brother.

A mind that greets its brother without judgment finds it has greeted far more than a person. In accepting him it accepts the whole from which he came, and discovers the giver waiting inside the gift.

Messenger: the brother who carries love's presence, the one whose welcome opens the mind to the source that sent him.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Welcome passed along a chain is the very shape of becoming whole: whoever opens a door to a messenger of the true self opens, without knowing it, to the image of God itself.

Old alchemy makes this clear. Just as the moon takes in the sun's light and passes it down to earth, drawing from the source what it then hands on, so a soul that truly welcomes someone carrying meaning draws itself toward the deep pattern standing behind them. What arrives in that meeting is not kept for one person alone but flows on toward a higher completion.

Where a person's resistance softens, the chain reaches its full depth: follower to the true self, and the true self to its awe-filled ground.

Live Matthew 10:40 today

  1. Answer the door, the call, or the knock at your desk as if the person arriving is the best thing in your afternoon. Your face decides the meeting before either of you speaks.
  2. At the grocery checkout, look at the cashier and use their name off the tag. One real greeting in a line of blank ones changes what kind of place that store is.
  3. When the group chat turns on someone who is not there, do not pile on and do not go silent either. Say one true, kind thing about them and let the thread move.

Who did I meet today and manage not to actually see?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Namaste

The greeting means the deep self in me bows to the deep self in you. It treats every meeting as two windows opening on the same sky.

Sufism · Ibn Arabi

The one you love in another is not finally the other, it is the one reality showing itself in that particular face. Whoever welcomes the face has already welcomed the source.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Receive every person with a bright face, because the way you take someone in is the whole of your treatment of them. Nothing you give later undoes a cold welcome.
