Psychoanalysis

A person at war with his own dark side cannot win by turning that darkness against itself. Anger used to beat down anger only feeds it. Cruelty that punishes cruelty leaves a man crueler than before. The dark part cannot drive out the dark part.

A mind split into two enemies, each trying to destroy the other, spends all its strength on itself and has none left for living. It falls apart. What heals the split is not the victory of one side but the slow work of owning both and holding them together.

  1. Catch yourself being hard on yourself for being hard on yourself. The second layer is the trap, so just stop at the first one and let it stand without a verdict.
  2. In the group chat or the argument at dinner, resist matching the tone that is annoying you. Answer in your own register, slower and plainer, and watch what happens to the room.
  3. When a rude email arrives, write the furious reply in a blank document and send a short factual one instead. You get to keep the heat without spending it on someone.

Which part of me am I trying to beat into silence using exactly the same force I say I am against?
