Matthew 12:46 · World English Bible
While he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, seeking to speak to him.
The mother is the spirit, and the brethren are those born of the same anointed seed within a person, and they stand without because the inner truth cannot be reached by the crowd that hears only the outer, literal word. To stand outside is to remain in the state that takes Scripture as history and stone, unable to enter the room where the deeper meaning is spoken.

ESOTERIC
The mother is the spirit, and the brethren are those born of the same anointed seed within a person, and they stand without because the inner truth cannot be reached by the crowd that hears only the outer, literal word. To stand outside is to remain in the state that takes Scripture as history and stone, unable to enter the room where the deeper meaning is spoken.
The spirit and its kin wait at the threshold of a mind still turned toward the outward hearing. What is kindred to the light stands just beyond the literal crowd, wanting to be admitted to the inner speech. The scene draws the line between the outward mind that grasps only surfaces and the inner knowing that shares one seed with the light.
Mother: the spirit that gives the anointed light its form Brethren: those born of the same anointed seed, kindred to the inner light Without: the outward state that reads the words literally and stands apart from the inner meaning

What have I been hearing for years without ever letting it in?
A monk can recite every sutra and still be standing in the courtyard. The teaching is not transmitted by the words that reach the ear, and the one who stays with the words stays outside the gate.
The way that can be put into speech is not the way itself. Names point at the thing and then take its place, so the person who holds the name tightly never meets what it was naming.
The lover hears the reed flute and weeps, while others hear only wood and air. The same sound is a crowd noise to one listener and an opening to another, and nothing in the sound decides which.
