Matthew 12:47 Meaning One Said to Him

One said to him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers stand outside, seeking to speak to you.”

What does Matthew 12:47 mean?

Family here names states inside one person, not people in a doorway. The mother is the spirit within, and the brethren are the thoughts born of the same seed of higher awareness, and both are said to stand outside, cut off from the awakened center that could answer them.

Family here names states inside one person, not people in a doorway. The mother is the spirit within, and the brethren are the thoughts born of the same seed of higher awareness, and both are said to stand outside, cut off from the awakened center that could answer them. That outside is where a person lives who takes every name in Scripture as history and biography rather than as a map of the self. So the spirit and its true offspring wait at the edge while attention stays fixed on the literal and the external, and the union that should join them never happens.

What this describes is the ordinary condition of reading and living from the surface. The inner life keeps signaling, and the mind kept busy with outward things never turns to receive it.

Mother: the spirit within a person, the feminine source that carries and gives birth to higher awareness Brethren: the thoughts and awarenesses born of the same seed of the awakened self, kindred to the spirit

Live Matthew 12:47 today

  1. Sometime today, put the phone face down and stay with yourself for two minutes without a task. Something in you has been signalling for a while, and it cannot get through the noise.
  2. Ask one person today a question you actually want the answer to, then stay quiet long enough to hear it. The real conversation is usually waiting behind the first polite answer.
  3. When the day speeds up, a late email, traffic, someone upset with you, take one breath and check in with yourself before you respond. One second of turning inward changes what comes out.

What in me has been trying to get my attention, and when did I last stop long enough to listen?

Hinduism · Upanishads

Two birds sit in the same tree. One eats the fruit and is busy with it, the other simply watches, and the watcher is who you actually are, though you spend your life as the eater.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can live a whole life among outward things and never once go inside, where a quiet and unspoiled place is always available to you. The retreat is never unavailable, only unvisited.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

A man chased by his own shadow ran faster and faster until he dropped, when all he had to do was step into the shade and sit. The busier the outward motion, the less likely the simple turn inward.
