Matthew 14:24 Meaning But the Boat Was Now

But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

What does Matthew 14:24 mean?

The ship is the individual self carrying its cargo of faculties across the waters of life, the small vessel of the personality afloat on forces larger than itself. The sea is the whole emotional and unconscious depth in which a person moves, and its waves are the risings of feeling that toss the vessel about.

Esoteric

The ship is the individual self carrying its cargo of faculties across the waters of life, the small vessel of the personality afloat on forces larger than itself. The sea is the whole emotional and unconscious depth in which a person moves, and its waves are the risings of feeling that toss the vessel about. The contrary wind is the opposing breath of spirit or circumstance running against the course, the resistance a person meets when the inner current pushes one way and the outer another. To be in the midst, far from either shore, is the state of being caught between, no longer at the point of departure and not yet arrived.

What the image holds is the ordinary condition of the struggling self, borne up and beaten by feelings it cannot govern, driven off its course by a force it did not choose.

Ship: the individual self and personality, the vessel carrying the faculties across life's waters Sea: the emotional and unconscious depth in which the person moves Waves: the risings of feeling that toss and beat the vessel Wind: the opposing breath of spirit or circumstance running against the self's chosen course

Live Matthew 14:24 today

  1. When a feeling knocks you off balance today, say what it is in one sentence: I am angry, I am scared, I am tired. Naming it does not fix it, but you stop being tossed around by something unnamed.
  2. When someone close to you is clearly in the middle of something, stop trying to pull them to shore. Sit with them in it and say you are not going anywhere.
  3. When a day goes sideways, the plan collapses, the email lands wrong, the traffic makes you late, stop arguing with the fact of it. Deal with what is actually in front of you now.

What am I fighting that I did not choose and cannot change?

Stoicism · Epictetus

You do not control the wind. You control how you set the sail. Fighting the weather is the only wasted effort.

Tao Te Ching 78

Water does not argue with what is in its way. It gives, and in giving gets through.

Buddhism · the second arrow

The wave hitting the boat is the first pain. Telling yourself it should not be happening is the second, and that one is yours.
